We normally cook for ourselves while in journey. We use a backpacking stove which is very popular with travelers. It is lightweight and easy to use. To cook lunch on a backpacking stove you do not need an armful of firewood. Unlike a typical fire, some small twigs are enough for it. You don’t need to buy fuel for the stove, which brings it significant advantage over canister or liquid fuel stoves.

In addition to this stove, we have Primus OmniFuel which can use both gas and petrol as fuel. This is a very good stove, but we use it only in extreme conditions (during heavy rain or when there is no kind of wood around). We keep at least 100 g of petrol for such occasions.

Our cookware consists of a 3 l pot in which we cook everything. It is a bit cracked and rather smoked. Our pot likes smoke so much that wouldn’t let it be cleaned off. We have two metal spoons (we also use them as tools while changing tires in case of punctures), two light metal bowls, two metal mugs, one knife and one 0.5 l thermos. This is a full list of our cookware. For a cyclist, as you might know, each gram matters, so it is better not to take unnecessary things.

When it comes to food, we always have tea, sugar, salt, oil and some groats. Fruit, vegetables and any other food specialties of a country we only buy in an amount enough for one day.

We normally stop to cook lunch somewhere in the outskirts of a town or village. Any nice glade with a shady spot located on a river bench, in a forest edge or just on a roadside can be suitable for this. Though several times we happened to be cooking in a city public garden, on a bus stop or in a monastery yard… Normally, you can feel free to cook in such places in Asian countries.

When looking for a place to cook your lunch pay attention to the type of property. If it is a private property or a state one with some particular restrictions, you have to ask for permission to cook on fire. It goes without saying that we prepare breakfast and dinner in the places where we stay for night.

You also have to remember that when using a place to cook you can’t harm the environment: leave the location where you were camping as it was, don’t litter it, and take all nonorganic wastes to dispose them in a garbage can.

What do we eat as cyclists while being on the road?

It depends largely on the country. For example, during summertime in countries where vegetables are cheap, we often cook our favorite vegetable ragout, which is both nutritious and tasty. We also cook various soups, dishes from potato, porridge of different groats. We certainly often eat rice in south-eastern Asian countries. We sometimes discover local recipes, like we did in Myanmar. We learned there how to cook “mohinga”, local noodles with very interesting ingredients. When we stay for longer in cities, there isn’t much opportunity to cook, so we often eat at inexpensive street cafes, which gives us a chance to learn more about local cuisine.

In hot countries our treat for breakfast is raw oat flakes soaked in cold water and condensed milk, with raisins or fruit on top.

We easily do without meat: Yaryna is a vegetarian and Volodia doesn’t care much for meat.

Frankly speaking, Folknery cook whatever they are into when on the road. We don’t stick to any particular diet or nutrition system, and we’re not much concerned about balanced consumption of nutrients, etc. We’re not against all these nutrition systems, but we just think that there are a lot of more interesting things to pay attention to while travelling. In Asian countries, we eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, which provide us with vitamins. This kind of food is very healthy and, by the way, it’s cheap in Asia.

We try our best to avoid eating harmful food, which we call “chemistry”. Colorful soda, ketchup, mayonnaise, etc. fall into this category. We drink a lot of raw and salubrious spring water. When we want to treat ourselves with a tasty drink, we make lemonade by mixing water, lemon and some sugar. In India, Nepal and Myanmar we discovered a very healthy and tasty drink from sugar cane to which mint, lemon and ice are added. It costs only 40 cents.

Our main advice for you is: whatever you cook while travelling and to whichever diets you keep always try to eat only wholesome and healthy food. While cooking add main ingredients – positive attitude and good humor. Bon appetit!
